Ability Q Program

April 8, 2014 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Ability Q Program

Purpose: Ability Q Program formerly known as Disability Mentoring Day was initiated to provide students with disabilities at the local universities an opportunity to connect with professionals in their field of study.

Partnerships: Qualcomm San Diego has developed relationships with the Disabled Student Services offices at several universities which help facilitate the marketing of the program as well as the application process. Internationally, Qualcomm campuses around the globe are currently establishing relationships with their local universities in hopes of identifying students who could also participate in our Ability Q Program/Disability Mentoring Day. Our Bay Area campuses (San Jose, Santa Clara and San Francisco offices) will be holding the Ability Q Program on March 28th in partnership with Berkeley University.

Pre-work: Qualcomm representatives reach out to the local universities to establish contact and help market the Ability Q/Disability Mentoring Day. Each university is then responsible for marketing the program to their students either directly through postcards, postings on their websites or through the Career Services departments.

Applications are due approximately one month prior to the actual mentoring day which usually occurs in November (dates will vary depending on the Qualcomm Campus). Analysis is completed on each student application, reviewing the student’s area of study, career goals and interests. Based on the student’s area of expertise, the student is paired with a Qualcomm professional in their field of study. Prior to the event, each Qualcomm volunteer is given a copy of the student’s application as well as a preview of the schedule for the actual mentoring day. The mentor will reach out to the student prior to their visit to introduce themselves and learn a little more about the student’s background and interests.

Day: Morning Program: Ability Q/Disability Mentoring Day at Qualcomm begins with a “kick off” meeting where the student guests learn a bit more about Qualcomm’s business, culture and environment. Each student is introduced to their host.

The Work Day: Each Qualcomm host prepares a variety of activities for their student mentor. This may include having the student conduct informational interviews, attend meetings, observe business activities and tour the campus.

Career Search Activities: At the close of the program, students reconvene and attend a seminar which includes an informational session about job searching, professional networking and resume writing.

On Going: Students are encouraged to apply for summer internships and entry level employment positions.
